Ryan Reynolds Is Playing Detective Pikachu in a Pokémon Movie. What?:

The Hollywood Reporter delivered this funny bit of news late Wednesday, reporting that Reynolds has joined co-stars Justice Smith (The Get Down) and Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird) in the latest big-screen adaptation of the wildly popular Japanese gaming franchise. The story revolves around Pikachu, Detective Pikachu, as he helps a young boy find his missing father. Newton will play a journalist who helps the pair along the way. Per T.H.R.’s sources, the role will be “motion-capture in nature,” so perhaps it’ll look a bit like the trailer for the game version of Detective Pikachu?

As his absurdist Twitter and Deadpool performance have taught us, Reynolds is probably the perfect guy to have a lot of weird fun with this role. He’s also got some experience in this arena, having lent his voice to animated projects before, including Family Guy and The Croods (remember The Croods??). So long, Pikachu who can only say its own name! Hello, Pikachu who will probably mutter curse words under his breath and mock everything in sight.
